Cake Cutting Specifications / How to Cut Our CakesUpdated 9 months ago

Not all cakes are the same and as per our box, our cakes are fragile. Cutting a tall cake with 4-6 layers requires a bit of care to ensure neat slices and avoid toppling the cake. You can refer to our Cake Size Guide showing square cuts. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you:

Tools You'll Need:

  • Long serrated knife (bread knife works well)
  • Cake server or spatula
  • Cake board or large, flat surface
  • Paper towels or a damp cloth

Steps:

  1. Chill the Cake:

    • Refrigerate the cake for about 30 minutes before cutting. This will firm up the layers and make slicing easier.
  2. Prepare the Knife:

    • Ensure your knife is sharp and clean. You can warm the blade by running it under hot water and then drying it with a towel.
  3. Score the Cake:

    • Lightly mark the cake’s surface with the knife where you plan to cut. This will guide your cuts and help keep them even.
  4. Cut the Cake into Slices:

    • Start by cutting a small wedge from the top of the cake. This initial cut should be about 1-2 inches wide.
    • For a tall cake, it's often easier to cut the cake into smaller sections before serving. After the initial wedge, you can cut the cake into 1-2 inch slices, moving around the cake in a circular pattern.
    • Make sure to cut straight down to the cake board to avoid uneven slices.
  5. Serve the Slices:

    • Use a cake server or spatula to carefully lift each slice and place it onto plates.
  6. Clean the Knife:

    • Wipe the knife with a damp cloth or paper towel between cuts to ensure clean slices.

Tips:

  • Cutting Tall Layers Separately: If the cake is extremely tall and wobbly, consider cutting the cake in half horizontally first, separating it into two shorter cakes. Then, proceed to cut each shorter cake into slices as described above.

  • Use a Cake Divider: If you have one, a cake divider can help make evenly sized slices.

  • Avoid Crushing: Apply gentle, even pressure to avoid crushing the layers and filling.

Following these steps will help you cut a tall cake with multiple layers neatly and efficiently. Enjoy your beautifully sliced cake!
